Language Center

The Language Center is devoted to providing innovative general English courses for the university. We provide up-to-date multimedia and audio-visual English learning materials, and organize English learning activities and campus English proficiency tests. Additionally, we are increasing the number of classrooms that will be equipped with multimedia teaching facilities in order to conduct international English proficiency tests and promote English teaching quality. We also aim to cultivate excellent English skills in eastern Taiwan by developing an e-learning environment.

“English Reading and Writing,” “English Communications,” and “Online English Learning” are our primary English courses designed to develop our students the four basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These courses allow students to develop a self-motivated interest in learning English that will help them develop effective learning skills and be in accordance with the trend of autonomous and lifelong learning.

In addition, we have designed practical English courses to foster local characteristics and incorporate practical “real life” activities. These specific courses are run during the break between semesters and in summer. For example, “Chinese-English Bilingual News Broadcasting” allows students to produce bilingual news broadcast programs on issues concerning the eastern coast of Taiwan. “English for Guided-Tour and Interpretation” integrates local tourism resources to enrich course contents and provide students with opportunities for actual practices. Apart from practical courses, we also hold service-learning activities, such as recruiting volunteers to tell English stories to students at nearby primary schools and planning English summer camps for rural primary schools. These activities enable students to better understand their communities and provide an opportunity for them to put the knowledge they learned in class into practice.

Our faculty includes Taiwanese and foreign instructors, each with diversified interests and various areas of expertise in the English language. Students can take a few elective English courses of their own interests, besides required English courses. The curriculum for each course aims to provide a comprehensive learning environment by combining both theory and practice. By taking General English courses, students can complement their knowledge in their specific fields of study and prepare themselves for an ever-increasing globalized world after graduation.
